The home is supposed to be a refuge, where we can live in comfort and safety. Unfortunately, germs, molds, pollen and other contaminants in the air do not respect this, to the detriment of those who suffer from allergies and asthmas. Not to mention those who have to live with smokers. This is why air purifiers for the home are becoming a necessity for many households.Air purifiers are available in many sizes and use different technologies, often in combination with each other, to clean the air in the home. The air purifiers for the home most people are familiar with use High Energy Particulate Arrestance or HEPA filters to physically trap particles by forcing air through the filter.HEPA filters must be able to remove at least 99.7 percent of particles 0.3-micrometers in size to be certified. Thus, care must always be taken with vendors who advertise filters that are HEPA-like or which claim to achieve 99 percent air purification.
They are also known to be effective at trapping particles of as small as 0.01 micrometers. Sometimes, pre-filters are installed in front of HEPA filters to remove larger particles. This allows HEPA filters to be used longer before they have to be cleaned or replaced. The best thing about HEPA filters is that they do not produce any harmful byproduct or ozone. However, they are not effective against noxious fumes and chemicals.
For gases or so-called volatile chemicals, an activated carbon air purifier is the most commonly used air purifier. What the activated carbon basically does is convert gaseous contaminants to a solid state. They are most effective when used with HEPA filters, which can then trap the converted contaminants. Activated carbon air purifiers have long been used by many industries.
The ultraviolet air purifier uses ultraviolet lamps to sterilize microorganisms in the air. It can be a standalone unit or combined with another filtration system that gets rid of the sterilized microorganisms.
Then there are electronic air cleaners that use electrical charges to capture pollutants. They are also called ionizer purifiers because they produce electrically charged air or gas ions that attach themselves particles and then are attracted to charged collector plates. Some models use fans that allow them to clean and distribute air faster. Ionizer purifiers without fans produce very little noise and consume less power. These air purifiers produce trace amounts of ozone, but these are well within safety standards.
And of course, there is the controversial ozone air purifier that produces ozone to react with other chemicals and break them down. Some dealers market ozone air purifiers as whole house air purifiers. However, ozone is known to be harmful so air purifiers of this type are not recommended for household use.
Air purifiers for the home run more quietly than many home appliances. Although frequent filter replacement and electrical consumption make up most of the cost of operating air purifiers, there are filters that can be easily cleaned by hand or with a vacuum cleaner, and many air purifiers coming out in the market are now Energy Star compliant for energy efficiency. In the end, the health benefits air purifiers for the home give make them worth the cost.
